A plural on a label usually does one of two jobs. Singular and plural on a label
When a declaration lists several numbered peptide names, it is describing a blend: several defined molecules, each with its own nominal mass, each separately declared. When it lists a source plus the word hydrolyzed, it is describing a distribution of fragments produced by cleaving a larger protein, and no single mass applies. The two behave differently under analysis, which is the practical difference. A defined sequence gives a main peak in reversed phase chromatography and one mass by mass spectrometry; a hydrolysate gives an unresolved envelope and a range, usually quoted as an average molar mass.
The vocabulary does not always respect that distinction. Two label regimes for the same word
In the United States a product sold as a dietary supplement carries a Supplement Facts panel: a serving size, servings per container, and declared amounts for any dietary ingredient listed. Where a structure or function claim is made, the label must carry the standard disclaimer stating that the statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. A cosmetic carries no such panel. It carries an ingredient declaration in descending weight order above one percent, a net quantity, and a responsible party or distributor.
Which regime applies depends on intended use as represented by the seller, and the same molecule can fall on either side of the line depending on how it is presented. That has a direct consequence for comparison: you cannot take an amount from a supplement panel and set it against a cosmetic declaration, because the second figure is not published. It also means that a claim about the structure or function of the body moves a product toward drug territory, which is a regulated category with its own approval route and its own evidence requirements. What a certificate of analysis can show
A certificate of analysis is the document that turns a declaration into a measured statement for one batch, and reading one is a specific skill. Identity is normally established by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry or by MALDI-TOF, which returns a mass. Purity is normally reported by reversed phase HPLC, and the report should state the gradient, the column and the detection wavelength, because a purity figure without a method is not interpretable. The administrative fields matter as much as the numbers. The batch or lot number on the certificate must match the one on the container, the report should carry a date and a signature, and the testing laboratory should be named. Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 indicates that a laboratory has been assessed for competence on the methods it reports, which is different from a laboratory simply existing. A certificate without a batch number is a description of a typical batch, and that distinction matters whenever the figures are being used to compare two listings rather than to check one container.
