hydropeptide: What a Brand Name Does and Does Not Document
The word peptide inside a brand name is doing branding work, not chemical work. A brand name is a trademark, and a trademark is registered to identify commercial origin rather than to describe composition. That is the useful starting point for any peptide line. What can be established from public documents is a short list: the registered word mark and its class of goods, the legal entity behind the label, the ingredient declarations printed on each pack, and any formulation literature the company has published. What cannot be established from the name alone is which peptides appear, in what form, or in what quantity.
What follows is a method rather than a verdict. Read the brand as a set of documents, then read the ingredient declaration as the only regulated statement about composition. What a brand name actually documents
When a company registers a word mark, the registration covers a class of goods and a territory. Cosmetic preparations sit in class 3 of the Nice Classification and dietary supplements in class 5, and one brand can hold marks in several classes at once, which is one reason a name alone says nothing about the category a given product falls in. Registers are public. The WIPO Global Brand Database and national offices such as the USPTO publish the mark, the owner name, the class list and the current status. That is genuinely documentable material. The owner name is worth reading carefully, because the legal entity on the register is often not the trading name printed on the front of the pack.
Two further public records exist on both sides of the Atlantic, and both are administrative rather than technical. In the European Union, Regulation 1223/2009 requires each cosmetic product to carry a named responsible person and an address on the label, and it requires a product information file to be held and made available to authorities on request. In the United States, the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 requires facilities that manufacture or process cosmetics to register with the FDA and to list products. Neither record says anything about a peptide. Both tell you which legal person is answerable for the pack in front of you.

Reading the peptide entries in a line
A peptide appears in a declaration under an INCI name, and the parts of that name carry the meaning. Acetyl denotes an N-terminal acetyl group, palmitoyl a sixteen-carbon acyl chain, myristoyl a fourteen-carbon one, and copper a complexed metal ion. The number at the end is a sequence identifier assigned by the naming body; it is not a percentage and not a count a reader can derive. Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is one specific pentapeptide carrying that acyl group, and the 4 distinguishes it from other palmitoyl pentapeptides rather than ranking it against them. A prefix and a number together are the signature of a defined molecule.
A bare word peptide with no prefix and no number usually corresponds to a hydrolyzed protein fraction, and the entry will normally say so in those words. Position matters as much as naming. Entries above one percent are listed in descending order by weight, entries below one percent may appear in any order, and the preservative block plus the fragrance and colorant entries sit near the end of the list. Anything printed after that block is bounded near the one percent line. Comparing a line without comparing claims
The most informative comparison is internal. Take two products from the same line and place their declarations side by side: the shared entries tell you what the brand treats as its base formula, and the differing entries tell you what each product is positioned around. Vehicles differ too, and a peptide declared in a thin serum sits in a different physical environment from the same peptide in a rich cream, which changes spread, feel and the amount delivered per application without changing the entry on the list. Reading the declaration as a formula rather than as a shopping list is the whole exercise.
External comparison is harder, because two brands rarely print enough to compare. One may publish an INCI list with a full breakdown, the other a shortened front-of-pack summary, and no declaration states amounts. In that situation the sensible move is to compare what is checkable and to leave the rest alone. The checkable set is small but real, and it is the same set for every peptide product on the market, so the effort of learning it is paid back every time you pick up another pack or open another listing.
- Whether each peptide entry carries a prefix and a number, which indicates one defined sequence rather than a mixture.
- Where each entry sits relative to the preservative and fragrance block, which bounds it near the one percent line.
- Whether the declaration appears in full on the retailer page or only on the physical pack, and which one you are reading.
- Whether the brand publishes a batch number and a certificate of analysis, and whether that document names a laboratory.
- Whether the marketing wording and the declaration actually describe the same material, which is not always the case.
