A cosmetic or supplement name is rarely one identifier. It is usually several layers stacked on top of each other: a brand's finished-product name, a supplier's trade name for an ingredient, an assigned ingredient name with a definition behind it, and somewhere underneath a catalog number that identifies what was actually shipped. When a term such as enilome cannot be found in any public register, the useful question is not what it means but which layer it belongs to, because each layer is published in a different place and is stable over a different timescale. This page sets out those layers and shows why the same material legitimately appears under several unrelated names.

The distinction is practical rather than academic. If the term is a finished-product name, no chemical conclusion can be drawn from it and no registry will list it. The layers of a name, and where each is published

Work from the most stable layer upward. At the bottom sits the substance and whatever numeric identifiers attach to it: a CAS number, an EC number, a sequence and a molecular mass. Above that sits the assigned ingredient name, which is the name a regulator expects to see in a declaration and which has a definition attached. Above that sits the supplier's trade name for the material as sold, which may be a single substance or a mixture. At the top sits the finished-product name printed on the front of the pack, which is commercial speech and changes freely between markets and between years.

Each layer fails differently. A numeric identifier is stable per substance but is rarely printed on a consumer pack. An assigned name is stable and checkable, but it does not state how much of the material is present. A trade name is searchable only while the supplier chooses to publish it, and it is frequently sold on, renamed, or licensed to more than one brand. A finished-product name is the least stable of all, and a renaming tells you nothing about the formula underneath. This is why the first question to ask of an unfamiliar word is which layer it lives in.

Why one ingredient complex appears under several trade names

An ingredient house develops a blend, gives it a trade name, and sells it to many brand owners. Some of those brands license the right to print the trade name on the front of the pack; others are contractually barred from doing so and coin their own marketing language instead, which is why the same declared ingredient shows up beneath a dozen unrelated front-of-pack phrases. Distributors add a further layer when they relabel for a regional market, and contract manufacturers add another when they offer the same base to several clients under separate names. Every one of those steps is lawful and ordinary.

The consequence for a reader is a simple rule: search the declaration, not the front of the pack. Two products whose ingredient lists match in sequence are very likely built on the same material even if no word is shared between their names, and two products sharing a marketing phrase may have nothing in common at all. Where a trade name is printed beside the declaration, search it as a pair, because the value of the trade name is that it links a public marketing page to a defined entry. EU and US naming, and what a complex entry means

The two largest systems converge on most names and differ in procedure. In the European Union, CosIng lists assigned names together with CAS and EC numbers, a function category, and any restrictions that apply; the function field is a classification for labelling purposes and is not an assessment of whether a claim is substantiated. The declaration must use the assigned name, nanomaterials must be marked, and certain substances carry concentration conditions. In the United States, cosmetic labelling draws on the same assigned names as published in the trade dictionary, while the FDA does not approve cosmetic products or ingredients before market, with the exception of color additives, and fragrance and flavor may be declared as single terms.

A complex entry is the layer that confuses people most. In CosIng, some entries describe a mixture of several substances that a supplier sells as one ingredient, typically a peptide dissolved or dispersed in a solvent system with stabilisers. The composition is therefore set by the supplier's own specification rather than by a public monograph, and the peptide content of one complex need not match another that shares the same assigned name. That is also why position in the declaration, which is ordered by concentration down to the one percent line, is the only publicly available hint about how much of anything is present, and even that hint stops where entries fall below the line.
